Schattenverträgliches Gras mit feinen, spielerisch anmutenden Rispen.
Deschampsia wirkt sehr auflockernd im schattigen Staudenbeet
Die Schmiele ist auch schnittverträglich und hält sich lange im Strauss.

Deschampsia flexuosa kommt auch mit sehr sauren und mageren Bodenverhältnissen aus, auch in einem Moorbeet kann man es ansiedeln, sollte es aber kontrollieren.
In der Natur findet es sich oft mit Heidelbeeren oder Calluna
