Aus dieser Pflanze wird das begehrte Safran gewonnen, einzelne Stempelfäden werden entfernt und fermentiert.
Das muß allerdings jeden Tag aufs Neue getan werden, denn die einzelne Blüte blüht nur ein - zwei Tage!
Und Sie benötigen ziemlich viele für einen lohnenswerten Anbau, aber für ein paar Fäden für einen Safran-Risotto könnten 2-3 Töpfe schon reichen.
